Each year for vacation, during the week of July 4th, my whole family gets several cabins in the middle of nowhere. The Park where we stay has a lake, two pools and a main lodge, which is the only place in the park with wi-fi access. We basically spend the week walking from the pool, to the lake and back to our cabins. It is so relaxing!
One of my favorite things about vacation is finally getting to tackle the list of books I have been waiting to read all year! I am starting to build up my list of books to download for this year’s trip, and thought I would compile a list of past vacation reads in case you are also looking for highly entertaining summer reading options!
I have read all these books or series multiple times, which is why I recommend them so highly!
One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, No. 1)
There was a movie made a few years ago starring Katherine Heigl. If you saw the movie, but haven’t read the books (there are 21 in this series!), please please check the books out! They are hilarious, laugh out loud funny!
First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones is the first in a series of books (the sixth just came out) about Charley Davidson, who is the Grim Reaper. These books are a fast and easy read along with being funny!
Do you like paranormal and/or time travel romance? Then you will love Lynn Kurland and should buy the McLeod and de Piaget books! You don’t have to read them in any special order and while both series eventually start to intersect it is not confusing. I have really enjoyed all of her books that I have gotten my hands on! A Dance Through Time is the first of the McLeod books.
Continuing with the time travel romance theme is Janet Chapman’s Charming the Highlander this is the first book in her Highlander Series.
Are you following Jenny Lawson’s blog The Blogess? If not, you should go and right this wrong immediately! If you want to nearly pee your pants from laughing, you should read Let’s Pretend This Never Happened
The next two recommendations are not really considered “beach” reads. I love them and think both are awesome but they are very in depth and lengthy books. The authors have truly built a unique universe and I love them so much!
My last recommendation, which I will always bring up in any book list I make is my favorite book of all time:
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I first read this as a senior in high school (1997) and I have never found any book to take it’s place in my heart. If you are at all interested in the tales of King Arthur of Britain, this is a must read! It is the story of King Arthur as told from the points of view of the women in his life: Mother, Sister, Aunt and Wife. There are a few novels that take place before this story, and I love those as well, but feel this is the best of the group and should really be read first!
Okay, that is my super long post of suggested summer reading. Have you read any of the books on my list? What did you think? What should I add to my vacation reading list for 2014? Let me know your favorite beach reads in the comment section below!
Thanks for reading!
